Conventions and Notations for Knowledge Representation and Retrieval

چکیده

Much research has focused on the problem of knowledge accessibility, sharing and reuse. Specific languages (e.g. KIF, CG, RDF) and ontologies have been proposed. Common characteristics, conventions or ontological distinctions are beginning to emerge. Since knowledge providers (humans and software agents) must follow common conventions for the knowledge to be widely accessed and re-used, we propose lexical, structural, semantic and ontological conventions based on various knowledge representation projects and our own research. These are minimal conventions that can be followed by most and cover the most common knowledge representation cases. However, agreement and refinements are still required. We also show that a notation can be both readable and expressive by quickly presenting two notations – Formalized English (FE) and Frame-CG (FCG) – that we have derived from CG [9] and Frame-Logics [4]. These notations support the above conventions, and are implemented in our Web-based knowledge representation and document indexation tool, WebKB [7].

Knowledge representation and reuse on the WWW: conventions, RDF extentions and simple notations

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) provides a low-level general model to describe relationships between objects. Its ultimate goal is to permit the representation, combination and processing of most kinds of metadata or knowledge from Web-accessible documents or databases. Metadata resources can then be processed for information retrieval, filtering, personalizing, aggregation or manageme...

Knowledge Representation, Sharing and Retrieval on the Web

By “knowledge retrieval”, we refer to the automatic retrieval of statements permitting a tool to make logical inferences and answer queries precisely and correctly, as opposed to retrieving documents or statements “related to” the queries. Given the ambiguity of natural language and our current inability to make computers “understand” it, the knowledge has to be manually encoded and structured ...

Manageable Approaches to the Semantic Web

The Semantic Web is usually envisaged as a collection of Web accessible RDF documents that re-use RDF schemas. These schemas are expected to be most often independently designed and hence not sharing many categories. We are unconvinced that this approach is viable because the lack of semantic relationships between the categories will most often make it impossible for future Web search engines t...

Word Type Effects on L2 Word Retrieval and Learning: Homonym versus Synonym Vocabulary Instruction

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to assess the retention of two word types (synonyms and homonyms) in the short term memory, and (b) to investigate the effect of these word types on word learning by asking learners to learn their Persian meanings. A total of 73 Iranian language learners studying English translation participated in the study. For the first purpose, 36 freshmen from an ...

Image Classification via Sparse Representation and Subspace Alignment

Image representation is a crucial problem in image processing where there exist many low-level representations of image, i.e., SIFT, HOG and so on. But there is a missing link across low-level and high-level semantic representations. In fact, traditional machine learning approaches, e.g., non-negative matrix factorization, sparse representation and principle component analysis are employed to d...
